 Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

The holiday season is here and you might find yourself being invited to a number of parties and social gatherings.

The parties may or may not involve you eating foods that are spicy or consuming  beverages that contain alcohol, but if they do and you indulge, you might find yourself developing blotchy facial areas of redness or acne pimples even if you are in your 40's or 50's.

The redness and acne breakouts are characteristic of a condition known as rosacea.

Today's skin tips are on how lasers can be used to help control or eliminate this bothersome condition.

Dr. W

Health Tip of the Week

Rosacea Laser Treatment- Stop the Redness, Bumps and Irritation

Do you suffer from red blotchy skin on your face?

If you do, chances are it is a skin condition known as Rosacea. Over 14 million Americans develop this skin condition between the ages of 30-60 years old. This common adult face rash has very little to do with your general health, even the healthiest of people may develop it. There is a higher incidence of Rosacea in women than men but both can develop this skin condition.

What does Rosacea look like?

Rosacea has three stages.

  • Stage one: The face gets flushed or has blotches of reddened areas. Generally this is limited to the central parts of the face on the forehead, nose, chin and apples of the cheeks. With time, small cobweb-like blood vessels will appear as superficial veins become dilated making the redness more noticeable.
  • Stage two: In this phase the redness begins to spread over a larger portion of the face. You may notice slight swelling and pimples or pustules develop that are also located in the mid facial areas.
  • Stage three: The third stage is characterized by the development of a bulbous nose known as rhinophyma. On average, most people do not progress to stage three. W. C. Fields, the famous comedian, had stage three rosacea.

How to stop the redness, bumps and irritation of Rosacea?

Rosacea is most often treated with topical and oral medications which can stop the pimples and breakouts, but the redness and flushing of the face that is the most common symptom is best treaded with lasers. Laser treatments will reduce the redness and diminish the visibility of veins. This treatment has also been found very helpful in reducing the acne-like pimples associated with this skin condition.

Most patients will see a significant improvement in their skin after just one laser treatment however it is necessary to have several sessions for full treatment and maximum clearing. Rosacea is not 100% curable, but you can slow the progression and eliminate the symptoms. If you take precautions to avoid over-exposure to the sun after your treatment many people will go years before the symptoms of flushed face and visible veins reappear.

Does laser therapy for Rosacea hurt?

You might find that you feel a bit of discomfort during the treatment but it is not really painful. It is comparable to the quick snap of an elastic band on the skin. Most women are not overly uncomfortable with this procedure. Men tend to have a lower pain threshold and may find it a bit more painful. It is rare to have a patient complain of unbearable pain or ask for the skin to be numbed with a topical cream during the laser treatment for the facial veins and redness associated with rosacea.

Will you need to take time off work for recovery from laser treatment?

There is no real downtime following a laser treatment. The skin may be a bit red or swollen but this generally disappears within a few hours. A few patients experience purpura or purple bruising that will go away within a few days. You can return to work as soon as you feel comfortable. Most patients leave the office after their session and go on with their daily routines.

If you are one of the 14 million Americans suffering from Rosacea you now know there is help available to you.  To get help with stopping this problem so you can live without a red bumpy face, schedule a dermatology consultation to have your skin evaluated and set up a laser treatment schedule to give you a clear complexion again.  You will be glad that you did.

discussion.gifRestore Your Health and Energy In Spite of Your Age

There is a saying that youth is wasted upon the young.  Ongoing research into the areas of health, wellness, and anti-aging might one day lead to a change in this statement so that perpetual youthful energy and vibrancy is still a possibility at any age.

While this might sound a little bit far fetched, it is becoming more and more of a possibility as each day goes by.  But, to tap into this realm of existence requires discipline, focused activity, with a specific purpose and target in mind.  So, I would like to ask you a question.

Is age starting to catch up with you?  Do you have less energy or vitality than you had when you were 5, 10, or 20 years younger?  Well if so, you don't have to feel like the Lone Ranger.

As we age our body starts to not operate as well as it once did.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  Research into the aging process shows that metabolic changes take place within all of the cells of the body and a particular decrease is noticed in structures called "mitochondria" which are the energy reservoirs.  Muscle cells contain the highest concentration of mitochondria, especially cardiac muscle which is found in the heart.  While it is inevitable that these changes will take place, there are two things in particular you can do to make things better: follow a healthy diet or eating plan and exercise.

We'll start with exercise.  I know that most of us don't really always enjoy exercise; however there are fun ways that you can do it.  You can always grab an MP3 player and load up your favorite music or even an audio book and go for a walk.  It doesn't have to be a long walk in the beginning.  Just a walk around the block might be all you can do.  That's better than nothing though.

Perhaps for exercise you can find something that you like to do for fun.  For example, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise out there, working almost all parts of your body.  Simply getting out and playing a game can start you out with some exercise that is more enjoyable.  Get out and shoot some hoops with your kids or nephews or nieces.  Whatever you choose to do, try to get out and do it frequently and build a habit of doing some form of exercise.  Thirty minutes of exercise three days per week can have a big impact on your energy level as well as improve sleep habits, and how your body processes the food you eat.

When it comes to diet and eating healthy, there are lots of things to consider there as well.  Allergies are one of the biggest such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance; the other consideration is whether or not you have a disease of some sort such as diabetes or high blood pressure.  If either of these is true, you need a little consultation before you make too many radical decisions in your eating habits.  This can be in the form of some good research online, or from your physician or a registered dietitian.

There are many foods out there which promote health and wellness.  For example, garlic has been known for centuries to have healing qualities.  Seek out vitamins that are high in fiber, vitamins and protein.  Beans, beans the musical fruit should be redone to read "beans, beans, the magical fruit."  Of course they're not really magical, but they offer great benefits nutritionally in the form of vitamins, protein and fiber.  Beans are definitely a food that you should add to your diet if you're not already.

Stay away from fried food and foods with a lot of fat.  These will clog up your arteries as well as excessive calories that can increase weight.  This, in turn, makes your body work harder to pump blood and will affect your stamina and cardiovascular health in general.  Sure you can eat these things, but like most things, do so in moderation or just occasionally.  Make sure to mix in some fresh fruits like a banana or blueberries with your breakfast.

The two areas of healthy diet and exercise are always a good place to start when it comes to health and wellness.  Used in combination with natural supplements, meditation, healthy relationships, and activities that fulfill your life purpose, diet and exercise will do almost everything you want.

Do this regularly for at least 30 days and you will be sure to notice an increase in energy as your body becomes healthier. When so inspired, continue this as part of your plan for lifelong health and abundant energy.

Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

Magnetic Hair Loss Products

Magnet therapy (or magnetic therapy) has been widely used to treat a whole range of conditions and diseases including hair loss.

Several magnetic hair loss products are available. These include:

  • A magnetic hair brush.

  • A magnetic helmet.

  • A plastic roller (with plastic teeth on the outside and magnets on the inside).

First of all, let me state the obvious: magnet therapy does not involve "pulling" the iron in your blood around your scalp follicles - you do not have tiny pieces of metallic iron floating around your body, and your blood is not magnetic!

The iron in your body is attached to a protein called haemoglobin. Oxygen bonds with this organic form of iron and is then circulated by your red blood cells. There is no product that can create an increase in circulation through any magnetic force of attraction.

So, how does magnet therapy work? And can it really help your hair?

A magnetic field can move (or spin) electrons and also ionize (charge) oxygen atoms within water (and therefore blood). This is called ionisation by magnetic induction (IMI).

Apparently, the oxygen ions that magnetic fields create through IMI can restore normal blood pH.

Most people have slightly acidic blood (i.e., low pH) usually due to excessive protein consumption. Cell walls and capillaries are pH sensitive. And, if the blood pH is acidic, blood flow and therefore oxygen delivery will be restricted. So, by restoring normal pH, a magnetic field may improve circulation.

In fact, it has been recorded that, in some cases of extremely poor circulation, a 300% increase in blood flow has occurred within minutes of applying a magnetic field.

Obviously this suggests that magnet therapy may help improve the blood supply to your scalp and therein help your hair grow.

Blood treated in one part the body will circulate to all other parts. This means that you only need one magnetic product, and can apply it anywhere to gain the benefits it produces. In other words, you can wear a magnet on your wrist - you don't need to strap one (or roll one) around your head! Also, you can wear a wrist strap magnet 24 hours per day, but it's unlikely that you would use a magnetic roller or brush for any more than maybe 10 minutes per day.

The Magro uses magnet therapy for hair loss treatment. Note: if your email provider does not support html, you won't be able to see this image.

I myself wear a very powerful magnetic wrist strap. However I should stress that this is not how I managed to stop my hair loss and start growing healthy hair again - I only started wearing it several years after I found success with my own hands-on techniques. I wear it because, as a nutritionist, I know that maintaining a balanced blood pH is healthy. And, whether it helps or not, wearing it is completely effortless.

Whilst any beneficial effect magnetic products could have on your hair growth might be unclear, the magnetic roller should help increase scalp circulation through rolling the hard teeth over your scalp.

But, this raises the question: why pay $50 for a device when you can simply use a hard toothed comb for free?

Try it! Grab a firm, fine-toothed comb and press it into the scalp. How hard you press and for how long is up to you. But there's no doubt that it will increase blood flow locally for a short time.

You can test this by pressing the teeth of the comb into say the soft tissue on your hand. Very quickly it will turn red (which, of course, indicates that there's an increase in blood flow to the surface of your skin). You'll be surprised how long it remains red.

Note: you have to be careful with this idea - the blood flow represents a reaction to the trauma you're putting your skin under - if you press too hard and for too long you may make the skin raw and could even cause bleeding.

Also, if you lie face down on a bed with your head over the end while doing this exercise, you'll be using gravity to assist you. This will further encourage blood to flow to your hair roots, making this idea even more effective.

So, there you go, I've just saved you $50!

Whether or not you want to spent $50 for a magnetic roller is your choice of course: you can research the Magro roller product here:

I myself did not use the magnetic roller. You can learn how I ended my own hair loss and successfully restored normal natural hair growth at:

 Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

thanksgiving.pngIn the next few days, the tradition of Thanksgiving will be observed

I would like to share a bit of information with you which I have done before but feel it is useful to do so again.

My office staff and I have team meetings and on occasion, the first item on the agenda is to spend 5 minutes and let everyone talk about good news.

The good news can be either personal or something related to the medical office activities.  By beginning the meeting talking about good news, we are forced to think about something good no matter what else is going on in our lives.

You can imagine that it feels awkward and a little challenging for us to talk about good news when there are so many negative matters that could be focused upon such as high gas prices, traffic jams, aggressive drivers, too many bills to pay, kids getting in trouble at school, not enough time in the day, having to get up early to come in to work, and on and on and on. But when each of us have to force ourselves to talk about something that we consider  good news, then all of the negative thoughts get pushed out of our minds.

Some of the good news that the staff mentioned included being grateful for the patients we are able to treat and help clear up their various problems.  Other good news included that we were healthy, able to function in life, as well as the various family members that were part of our lives.

As I mentioned, It would have been a lot easier to complain and dwell upon the negative, but being forced to think about something good prevented this habit and the rest of the meeting usually works out positive even when discussing how to manage problems.

As Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaches, I challenge you to first think about good news that you have experienced this year in your life.  And to make it really fun, write down at least 5 things that you would consider good news for yourself and keep these in mind as the holiday season approaches, no matter what else is going on in your life, always remember to focus on the good news first.  If you so choose, share your list with a immediate family members, relatives, or friends.

As you know, many individuals experience the holiday blues for one reason or another and the holidays become a time of despair. If you know someone whose life experiences causes them to become sullen or sad during the holidays, then coax them along to try this exercise as well.  Even if they can only think of one item of good news, they will be better off for it.  After they share their good news with you, share your good news with them.

Happy Thanksgiving---It's Time For Good News!

Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

How Skull Expansion
Explains Successful
Hair Transplants

Some people ask me: If skull expansion causes hair loss, how do you explain the success of hair transplant operations?

It's a good question. Follicles from the back of the head (occipital region) transplanted to the balding (MPB) region can successfully grow hair. But, follicles from the MPB region transplanted to some other part of the body do not.

Why?

I believe there are a number of reasons:

First of all, at the time of a transplant, a patient will already be experiencing severe hair loss. This indicates that, in the area which will receive the transplant, skull expansion has probably already fully developed * and so no more (or very little) bone growth will occur following the procedure.

* Obviously the skull doesn't keep growing indefinitely, this process does eventually stop: the extent to which it grows depends upon skull shape. This also explains why some people will lose nearly all their hair whilst others lose hair in just one area (e.g., receding temples) or to a lesser extent (e.g., thinning hair).

So, if either existing MPB region follicles can be rejuvenated or healthy donor follicles/follicular units are transplanted to this area, normal healthy hair will be produced.

However, hair transplantation is a complicated process, so there's a lot more to it than that.

Transplanted follicles are avascular (i.e., without blood vessels) and must successfully stimulate angiogenesis (new blood vessel generation) if they are to survive. Follicles transplanted from the occipital region can successfully stimulate angiogenesis because:

1. They are healthy and active, vigorously producing hair.

2. They are normal sized, not miniaturized. This means that, when inserted, they should be slightly closer to the microcirculation (blood supply) beneath the follicle than are the remaining (miniaturized) follicles in the MPB region.

3. They have a small protective layer of brown adipose tissue (brown adipose tissue).

Brown adipose tissue is a type of fat (the other type being white adipose tissue) and has already been explained in a previous newsletter. If you missed it you can find out more from the following page:

http://www.top-hair-loss-remedy.com/brown-fat.html

Brown adipose tissue (or brown fat) accumulates around the follicles of healthy actively growing hair (such as in the occipital region), but not around dormant follicles such as in the MPB region. And it's been observed that the transplant technique known as follicular unit extraction (FUE) often lacks the protective layer of fat that other transplant techniques manage to extract from the donor site. In consequence of this, poor hair growth may result.

Also, studies have been made that link brown fat to angiogenesis.

So, for all these reasons, it is likely that brown fat assists in hair growth.

The picture below shows hair follicles penetrating deep into the fat layer, and the blood supply beneath it, in a healthy region of the scalp.

Hair follicles deep in fat layer and blood supply beneath. Note: if your email provider does not support html, you won't be able to see this image.

Follicles transplanted from the MPB region to some other part of the body cannot adequately grow hair because:

1. They are weaker and less active than follicles from the occipital region.

2. They are miniaturized and so will be further away from the microcirculation when inserted.

3. They do not carry any supportive adipose tissue.

Angiogenesis and healthy hair growth are, therefore, much less likely to succeed.

So, I would suggest that these are the reasons why transplanted follicles can grow hair in one region but not in another.

Rather than suffer the trauma of surgery, I believe the most effective way to beat hair loss is to treat the underlying cause: skull expansion. Many men and women are now using the techniques I developed to successfully stop their hair loss and restore normal hair growth again. You can learn more about skull expansion by reading the following page:
