Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

Wash or No Wash? Part 2

Last week I explained that, soon after I started my hair loss research, I came across the suggestion that going without shampoo for a long time can be healthy for your hair.

And that, after about six weeks, your body will restore a natural balance to the level of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands inside your hair follicles.

I also revealed that I tried this idea out on myself.

So, did it work?

No!

It didn't do a thing for me. In fact, it actually increased my rate of hair loss!

This exercise gave me six weeks of "bad hair days"!

Given that my own rate of hair loss was particularly severe, my DHT and sebum levels would have been very high indeed. So, perhaps in cases of rapid hair loss, down regulation might simply take longer to kick-in. Maybe if I had continued for several months, the rate of sebum and DHT production might have slowed down a bit.

However, I felt like all my hair would fall out if I continued. I also figured that this whole idea is a mistake for anyone suffering from androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) - if you go back maybe a thousand years, I'm pretty sure most of our ancestors didn't wash their hair very often, if at all.

But, they definitely did suffer androgenetic alopecia.

So, having experimented with this idea myself, I'm convinced that a high level of hygiene is a necessary component of good hair care. And I also believe that there's a good psychological effect to frequent hair washing - having clean skin and hair simply makes you feel good!

Whilst I've obviously made my decision, you might decide to give it a go. Everyone's different of course. So, what didn't work for me, might work for you. It may be worth trying. If it works, great. But you must also be prepared to suffer and not gain a thing from this experiment (apart from knowing that it simply does not work). So, if you try this idea, I wish you good luck!

I believe the most effective way to beat hair loss is to treat the underlying cause - skull expansion. I developed techniques to successfully stop my own hair loss and wrote an ebook so that others can do the same. You can read my customers comments about the ebook here:

Health Tip of the Week

How to Improve Your Health with the Power of Visualization

When you are faced with a challenge or concern related to your health and well being, what is the first thing that you do?

Do you focus on the problem at hand?

Do you search the internet to try and find out everything you can about the matter of concern?

Do you worry that the worse thing possible will happen and can only focus on an undesirable outcome?

Whichever approach, you usually try, I would like to provide you with information about an approach you may or may not all ready be using that can be a very good starting point to use, and that is Visualization.

Those with health concerns and body-image frustrations should not dismiss the Power of Visualization to help them achieve good health and a harmonious self-image.

One must first visualize being healthy, thin or beautiful before one can take steps to achieve that vision.

Visualization is always a key to success in any human endeavor, whether an artist creating a masterpiece, a corporate wizard executing a business plan, an Olympic athlete breaking a world record, or an everyday man or woman setting out to change something about their lives and achieve more humble goals, such as losing unwanted weight or finding solutions and remedies for their health and wellness concerns.

Many people dismiss visualization techniques as being hokey and faddish New Age practices, but visualization is not simply daydreaming about ones wants, needs or desires. The power of this technique to transform mundane daydreams into reality is more than merely the ability to immerse oneself in an imagined vision of a need or desire; it is a method of focusing mental energies to reinforce our conscious efforts. It is the practice of seeking to change the outer world through changing our internal thought processes.

Visualization should be an integral part of everyone's health journey. Health and wellness is achieved and maintained through a mindset that at its core is founded upon a vision of being healthy and fit. The first step in any weight loss program or health and wellness regimen is changing your mind and correcting the thought processes that allowed the weight gain or poor health to develop in the first place.

The transformative qualities of visualization are in many ways akin to the sympathetic magic's practiced by primitive peoples from time immemorial. The idea that a shaman wielding talismans and chanting incantations could heal the sick often would unlock the healing potential within the body of the patient who, through visualization, believed in the efficacy of the shaman's conjuring. The power of ideas within the mind can have a profound physiological effect on the health of the body, as medical science has long acknowledged.

So too does visualization work according to those who swear by it. Imagery and meditation visualization techniques can relieve pain; promote the healing process, combat stress and anxiety and general tension and is an effective healing tool that has long been overlooked and downplayed by western medicine.

Visualization can be said to be the conscious creation of our own reality by training the sub-conscious mind to accept as reality the achievement of our conscious goals, and thus we attract the desired reality through our conscious and sub-conscious efforts. It is said to work for any goal from athletics to business success to romance, but most important is the well-attested effect of visualization upon health, wellness and feelings well-being.

Is there an area related to your health and wellness that you think visualization could be of benefit to you?

Then, my challenge to you is this. Start today and set aside three to five minutes three times a day that you will practice this visualization. Use all of your senses as part of this process and reinforce your belief that the desirable outcome will occur. Commit to maintaining this process for the next three to six months and watch what starts to happen in your life.

Restore Your Health and Energy In Spite of Your Age

There is a saying that youth is wasted upon the young.  Ongoing research into the areas of health, wellness, and anti-aging might one day lead to a change in this statement so that perpetual youthful energy and vibrancy is still a possibility at any age.

While this might sound a little bit far fetched, it is becoming more and more of a possibility as each day goes by.  But, to tap into this realm of existence requires discipline, focused activity, with a specific purpose and target in mind.  So, I would like to ask you a question.

Is age starting to catch up with you?  Do you have less energy or vitality than you had when you were 5, 10, or 20 years younger?  Well if so, you don't have to feel like the Lone Ranger.

As we age our body starts to not operate as well as it once did.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  Research into the aging process shows that metabolic changes take place within all of the cells of the body and a particular decrease is noticed in structures called "mitochondria" which are the energy reservoirs.  Muscle cells contain the highest concentration of mitochondria, especially cardiac muscle which is found in the heart.  While it is inevitable that these changes will take place, there are two things in particular you can do to make things better: follow a healthy diet or eating plan and exercise.

We'll start with exercise.  I know that most of us don't really always enjoy exercise; however there are fun ways that you can do it.  You can always grab an MP3 player and load up your favorite music or even an audio book and go for a walk.  It doesn't have to be a long walk in the beginning.  Just a walk around the block might be all you can do.  That's better than nothing though.

Perhaps for exercise you can find something that you like to do for fun.  For example, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise out there, working almost all parts of your body.  Simply getting out and playing a game can start you out with some exercise that is more enjoyable.  Get out and shoot some hoops with your kids or nephews or nieces.  Whatever you choose to do, try to get out and do it frequently and build a habit of doing some form of exercise.  Thirty minutes of exercise three days per week can have a big impact on your energy level as well as improve sleep habits, and how your body processes the food you eat.

When it comes to diet and eating healthy, there are lots of things to consider there as well.  Allergies are one of the biggest such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance; the other consideration is whether or not you have a disease of some sort such as diabetes or high blood pressure.  If either of these is true, you need a little consultation before you make too many radical decisions in your eating habits.  This can be in the form of some good research online, or from your physician or a registered dietitian.

There are many foods out there which promote health and wellness.  For example, garlic has been known for centuries to have healing qualities.  Seek out vitamins that are high in fiber, vitamins and protein.  Beans, beans the musical fruit should be redone to read "beans, beans, the magical fruit."  Of course they're not really magical, but they offer great benefits nutritionally in the form of vitamins, protein and fiber.  Beans are definitely a food that you should add to your diet if you're not already.

Stay away from fried food and foods with a lot of fat.  These will clog up your arteries as well as excessive calories that can increase weight.  This, in turn, makes your body work harder to pump blood and will affect your stamina and cardiovascular health in general.  Sure you can eat these things, but like most things, do so in moderation or just occasionally.  Make sure to mix in some fresh fruits like a banana or blueberries with your breakfast.

The two areas of healthy diet and exercise are always a good place to start when it comes to health and wellness.  Used in combination with natural supplements, meditation, healthy relationships, and activities that fulfill your life purpose, diet and exercise will do almost everything you want.

Do this regularly for at least 30 days and you will be sure to notice an increase in energy as your body becomes healthier. When so inspired, continue this as part of your plan for lifelong health and abundant energy.

Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

Wash or No Wash? Part 1

Soon after I started my hair loss research, I repeatedly came across the suggestion that going without shampoo for a prolonged period of time is healthy for your hair.

The reasoning behind this idea is that your body will, after about six weeks, restore balance to the level of sebum (oil) produced by the sebaceous glands inside the hair follicles (see diagram below).

Brown fat is found in the subcutaneous fat layer of the skin. Note: if your email provider does not support html, you will not be able to see this image.

For most people (including myself) this would mean a reduction in sebum rather than an increase. That's because, if you suffer hair loss, sebum and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in the affected region of the scalp will become excessively high.

At first I thought this radical approach to hair hygiene seemed ridiculous. Most of us are exposed to pollutants virtually every day (exhaust fumes, chemicals in foods, cleaning agents, cosmetic products, etc). So I considered using shampoo every single day as a sensible measure. After all, we wash every other part of the body on a daily basis, so why not the hair?

Furthermore, other research suggested that a clean scalp encourages hair growth, whilst a scalp clogged up with sebum, dirt, etc will not.

However, given that sebum production is controlled by DHT (a hormone definitively linked to hair loss) I wondered whether DHT levels could be "down regulated" (reduced) using this approach. In other words, if my hair follicles got all clogged up with sebum, after a while would the sebaceous glands eventually get the message to decrease production? And, in turn, would this also reduce DHT levels?

I decided it was worth finding out the answers to these questions. So I performed this experiment for six weeks.

Within 48 hours, my hair, scalp and follicles were all clogged up with sebum. I wanted to quit of course (everyone does when they first try this sort of thing). But I persevered for the full six weeks.

So, did it work?

Find out next week!

Best wishes,

Paul Taylor

Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

It seems that more and more of the patients that I see in the office are a little sleepy, fatigued, or just plain tired.

Many individuals mention that changes have taken place at their jobs or various life situations such as taking care of older parents or other family members that requires more and more of their time and energy.

A number of individuals have mentioned that they are now responsible for raising their grand kids in place of the parents for one reason or another.

We have previously covered the benefits of at least 7 hours of sleep a night and the negative factors that occur when you miss out on the benefits of effective rest.

However, if you find yourself in a position where there are more and more demands upon you from a time and effort perspective, then you need to set aside some time to increase your energy level and restore or protect your health.

Today's health tip gives you a couple of suggestions to get you started.

Dr. W

Health Tip of the Week

Restore Your Health and Energy In Spite of Your Age
