What's New with Dr. W?

Lance-my dogA number of quirky things happen in life that are hard to explain, so here is one of my own that I would like to share with you.

I have on many occasions made a diagnosis of Lupus for patients based upon skin rashes, hair loss, or a variety of other findings.

I specifically remember early in my practice when I diagnosed at least 20 individuals with lupus in one month which was more than I could have imagined.

As time went by, two of my staff members were impacted by lupus with one having a stroke in her late 20's and another staff member died in her early 40's as a result of lupus.

Consequently, I have always been aware of and sensitive to this condition and have supported the lupus foundation in its mission to increase awareness and funding research on this condition.

Well, of all things, my family pet, a dog named Lance developed problems with his skin and nose and over a several year period it would come and go, but never went away.

As luck would have it, the veterinarian recommended that our dog see a veterinary dermatology specialist.  When our dog went to this specialist, to my surprise, a diagnosis of lupus was made.

The thought had never crossed my mind.  But in hindsight, I was able to see some clues that I never would have associated with Lupus.  I can report that the dog is doing well, but he has to stay out of the sun which is one of the requirements to prevent flare ups of lupus.

This is one of my quirky experiences!

Healthy 365 Tip of The Week - You Need to Know Your BMI:

America continues to be in the middle of an epidemic of excessive weight gain.  Amazingly, it was recently reported that 5 of the top 10 fattest cities in the USA are in Texas.

Here are the criteria that were used to make this decision:

"To arrive at our rankings, we calculated the percentage of people who are overweight, the percentage with type 2 diabetes, the percentage who haven't left the couch in a month (CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System); the money spent on junk food (Bureau of Labor Statistics); and finally, the number of people who ate fast food nine or more times in a month (Mediamark Research)."

Number 1 on the list was Corpus Christi, El Paso 3rd, Dallas 4th, San Antonio 7th and Houston 9th.  Interestingly, Austin, Texas was 97th on the list!

One would think that the natural thing to do would be to increase awareness and take steps to reverse this trend, but this is not what is happening at all.

Read the following excerpt from an article that appeared in the June 4th issue of the Houston Chronicle:

"At the same time, a younger generation is continuing to grow far more overweight than previous Americans -- with a resulting boom in diabetes, and the many serious maladies associated with both obesity and diabetes. Hospital services are expanding to meet the need.

"The rise in obesity has increased the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, and shockingly in children, teenagers, young adults," said Ann-Marie Hedberg of the UT Health Science Center. "Obesity, with type 2 diabetes, and then all of the early onset complications" such as renal failure.

Hedberg says these complications lead to "huge" hospital admissions. "As far as growth with hospitals, it's absolutely an area of extreme focus. Diabetes has an enormous co-morbidity. Hospitals have to control complications with every admission."

Transplants due to obesity are also on the rise."
