Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

I want to share with you that on a day to day basis, I see many individuals with a wide variety of concerns related to the dermatology profession, such as the following:

  • a one month old with a red itchy rash covering the face and body,
  • a 52 year old with a bothersome mole that is itchy and irritating,
  • a 36 year old with itching of the scalp, soreness and hair loss,
  • a 45 year old with a skin lesion that needs a biopsy to check for skin cancer,
  • a 38 year old who thinks she is too old to have to deal with acne,
  • a 47 year old who wants to get her body back after childbirth and raising kids
  • a 19 year old who thinks that acne is the end of the world,
  • a 68 year old who wants the moles off her face so she can look younger
  • a 26 year old who wants to remove her facial hair and stop shaving
  • a 32 year old who is bothered by bumps and irritation on his scalp

You may or may not know that dermatology is a very broad field covering the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, and nail disorders.  The treatment rendered can include medical or surgical solutions.

Additionally, a number of dermatological treatments help to improve appearance and provide anti-aging effects both with and without surgical involvement.

So, when you have questions or need more details about these types of services, let me know and I will be happy to help you find the best solution for you.

During my many conversations with individuals like you, I have learned that skin conditions are not isolated and are part of the whole person.  Since I have a strong interest in health and wellness, I combine these areas of interest on many occasions.

Since weight gain and obesity now effect between 35% and 65% of Americans, today, I would like to provide you with a health tip about keeping the weight off once you have it off.

Health Tip of the Week

5 Successful Weight Loss Tips To Keep the Weight Off

You went to the gym five times a week for several months.  You stayed dedicated to the treadmill and a healthy diet. You knew the best way to lose weight, lost a large amount of weight and reached your goal!

You should congratulate yourself for your achievement because many people cannot reach their goals.

Now, the only question is: How do you keep the weight off?

Most people gain the weight back because they suddenly do not see the need to work out as hard and they start enjoying the foods they love again. It is much easier to go back to the previous lifestyle than it is to continue the one you have taken up for the past six months.

If you are worried about gaining all the weight back, you might find the following weight loss secrets useful to stay at your goal weight and keep in shape.

Weight Loss Tip #1 --- Continue Exercising: You may not have to go to the gym five days a week to jog for an hour and pump some iron for half an hour. You can cut back to three days or do only 30 minutes of exercise everyday.  The key is consistency and that means having some type of exercise routine.  If you are tired of the gym, start walking or jogging outdoors, go for hikes, play tennis or go swimming. Change things up so that you still stay active but not get bored.  But it is most important for you to keep up your activity level and avoid becoming more sedentary.

Weight Loss Tip #2 --- Continue Eating Healthy: Weight loss success does not mean going back to former eating habits. After all, remember that is what got you in trouble in the first place. You may not have to stick to a very strict diet like before, but you must continue eating healthy.  Eat your proteins, veggies, fruits and whole wheat goods.  Eat the foods you love on the weekends, on occasions or very moderately. Continue to use a journal to plan your meals and minimize the chance of impulse eating and unplanned binging.

Weight Loss Tip #3  --- Get a Health Partner:  If you know someone who has been successful in losing weight as you have and want to keep it off, partner with them.  Talk about your activities, your diet and perhaps exercise with them. This will help you stay motivated. Remember what your life was like before you started on your journey to lose the weight.  Remember the problems and pain you experienced in the first place.  Is that something you really want to go back to?

Weight Loss Tip #4 --- Find Someone Who is Just Getting Started With Losing Weight:  Find someone else you know who is trying to lose weight and serve as a role model.  Share with them the things that you did to help you succeed, and let them know how you got through the difficult times and emotions an managed to stay on track with what you wanted to achieve.  In addition to providing motivation to the person who is trying to reach their goal, being a mentor will remind you of what you did during the time you were on the way to your goal which will reinforce the mindset and behaviors for you at a new and deeper level.

Weight Loss Tip #5 --- Manage Stress Successfully:  Stress can be one of our greatest sources of undoing when we least expect it.  A new promotion at work can lead to a disruption of the balance you had in life as you adjust to the increased demands at work either in the work you have to do or sometimes the people you have to supervise.  Don't let this better job cause you to lose track of your personal well being.

It could be that you are the one in your family who is best at crisis management so everyone looks for you to handle all of the problems that come up.  Maybe you are good at handling 1 or 2, but if 5 or 10 problems happen at the same time, don't let this push you over the edge and back to food for comfort.

Set aside at least 15 minutes a day for relaxation and giving yourself a chance to enjoy calmness and quietness and reflect on your personal well being.  If you can do this more than once a day, then even better!

Using these 5 tips as well as just looking at yourself in the mirror and being proud of what you have achieved should be a good foundation to help you with keeping the weight off!

There is a saying that youth is wasted upon the young.  Ongoing research into the areas of health, wellness, and anti-aging might one day lead to a change in this statement so that perpetual youthful energy and vibrancy is still a possibility at any age.

While this might sound a little bit far fetched, it is becoming more and more of a possibility as each day goes by.  But, to tap into this realm of existence requires discipline, focused activity, with a specific purpose and target in mind.  So, I would like to ask you a question.

Is age starting to catch up with you?  Do you have less energy or vitality than you had when you were 5, 10, or 20 years younger?  Well if so, you don't have to feel like the Lone Ranger.

As we age our body starts to not operate as well as it once did.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  Research into the aging process shows that metabolic changes take place within all of the cells of the body and a particular decrease is noticed in structures called "mitochondria" which are the energy reservoirs.  Muscle cells contain the highest concentration of mitochondria, especially cardiac muscle which is found in the heart.  While it is inevitable that these changes will take place, there are two things in particular you can do to make things better: follow a healthy diet or eating plan and exercise.

We'll start with exercise.  I know that most of us don't really always enjoy exercise; however there are fun ways that you can do it.  You can always grab an MP3 player and load up your favorite music or even an audio book and go for a walk.  It doesn't have to be a long walk in the beginning.  Just a walk around the block might be all you can do.  That's better than nothing though.

Perhaps for exercise you can find something that you like to do for fun.  For example, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise out there, working almost all parts of your body.  Simply getting out and playing a game can start you out with some exercise that is more enjoyable.  Get out and shoot some hoops with your kids or nephews or nieces.  Whatever you choose to do, try to get out and do it frequently and build a habit of doing some form of exercise.  Thirty minutes of exercise three days per week can have a big impact on your energy level as well as improve sleep habits, and how your body processes the food you eat.

When it comes to diet and eating healthy, there are lots of things to consider there as well.  Allergies are one of the biggest such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance; the other consideration is whether or not you have a disease of some sort such as diabetes or high blood pressure.  If either of these is true, you need a little consultation before you make too many radical decisions in your eating habits.  This can be in the form of some good research online, or from your physician or a registered dietitian.

There are many foods out there which promote health and wellness.  For example, garlic has been known for centuries to have healing qualities.  Seek out vitamins that are high in fiber, vitamins and protein.  Beans, beans the musical fruit should be redone to read "beans, beans, the magical fruit."  Of course they're not really magical, but they offer great benefits nutritionally in the form of vitamins, protein and fiber.  Beans are definitely a food that you should add to your diet if you're not already.

Stay away from fried food and foods with a lot of fat.  These will clog up your arteries as well as excessive calories that can increase weight.  This, in turn, makes your body work harder to pump blood and will affect your stamina and cardiovascular health in general.  Sure you can eat these things, but like most things, do so in moderation or just occasionally.  Make sure to mix in some fresh fruits like a banana or blueberries with your breakfast.

The two areas of healthy diet and exercise are always a good place to start when it comes to health and wellness.  Used in combination with natural supplements, meditation, healthy relationships, and activities that fulfill your life purpose, diet and exercise will do almost everything you want.

Do this regularly for at least 30 days and you will be sure to notice an increase in energy as your body becomes healthier. When so inspired, continue this as part of your plan for lifelong health and abundant energy.
