One of the truths about life is that no matter who we are, or what we know, we can always use a little outside assistance with trying to figure out one matter or the other in life. One of the things I realized early on in medical school was that it is impossible to know everything! So, part of pursuing a profession in medicine meant that I would never know everything, and there would always be lifelong learning to fill in knowledge gaps, but what was I going to do? Eventually, I came to another realization that it is good to use other people and their strengths to help out in areas in which they were better than me. This led me to participate in study groups and each individual helped the other members better understand the course material for specific classes. One of my classmates in the study group agreed to take notes during lectures, transcribe them and give a copy to each member of the study group. Even though we sat next to each other in class, on many occasions when I would read her notes and compare them to what I heard or had written down, it seemed like we were in totally different lectures. She had written down details that I did not even remember hearing let alone write them down because of my slow handwriting and inability to keep up with the speed of the lecturer. I called her "the human tape recorder", and she was a great resource to help me with having accurate lecture notes. On other occasions, each member of the group contributed their special talent to help the others and the outcome was that we all did well academically because we all helped each other. So, as part of being your advocate for health, wellness, and dermatology related matters, I will recruit additional experts to provide their input to helping you have the healthiest life possible. So, from time to time I will have guest authors make contributions so that you get the best of all worlds to support your health and wellness. By the way, "the human tape recorder" went on to become an excellent pediatrician and now practices in Louisiana. |
