Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

It seems that more and more of the patients that I see in the office are a little sleepy, fatigued, or just plain tired.

Many individuals mention that changes have taken place at their jobs or various life situations such as taking care of older parents or other family members that requires more and more of their time and energy.

A number of individuals have mentioned that they are now responsible for raising their grand kids in place of the parents for one reason or another.

We have previously covered the benefits of at least 7 hours of sleep a night and the negative factors that occur when you miss out on the benefits of effective rest.

However, if you find yourself in a position where there are more and more demands upon you from a time and effort perspective, then you need to set aside some time to increase your energy level and restore or protect your health.

Today's health tip gives you a couple of suggestions to get you started.

Dr. W

Health Tip of the Week

Restore Your Health and Energy In Spite of Your Age

There is a saying that youth is wasted upon the young.  Ongoing research into the areas of health, wellness, and anti-aging might one day lead to a change in this statement so that perpetual youthful energy and vibrancy is still a possibility at any age.

While this might sound a little bit far fetched, it is becoming more and more of a possibility as each day goes by.  But, to tap into this realm of existence requires discipline, focused activity, with a specific purpose and target in mind.  So, I would like to ask you a question.

Is age starting to catch up with you?  Do you have less energy or vitality than you had when you were 5, 10, or 20 years younger?  Well if so, you don't have to feel like the Lone Ranger.

As we age our body starts to not operate as well as it once did.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  Research into the aging process shows that metabolic changes take place within all of the cells of the body and a particular decrease is noticed in structures called "mitochondria" which are the energy reservoirs.  Muscle cells contain the highest concentration of mitochondria, especially cardiac muscle which is found in the heart.  While it is inevitable that these changes will take place, there are two things in particular you can do to make things better: follow a healthy diet or eating plan and exercise.

We'll start with exercise.  I know that most of us don't really always enjoy exercise; however there are fun ways that you can do it.  You can always grab an MP3 player and load up your favorite music or even an audio book and go for a walk.  It doesn't have to be a long walk in the beginning.  Just a walk around the block might be all you can do.  That's better than nothing though.

Perhaps for exercise you can find something that you like to do for fun.  For example, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise out there, working almost all parts of your body.  Simply getting out and playing a game can start you out with some exercise that is more enjoyable.  Get out and shoot some hoops with your kids or nephews or nieces.  Whatever you choose to do, try to get out and do it frequently and build a habit of doing some form of exercise.  Thirty minutes of exercise three days per week can have a big impact on your energy level as well as improve sleep habits, and how your body processes the food you eat.

When it comes to diet and eating healthy, there are lots of things to consider there as well.  Allergies are one of the biggest such as gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance; the other consideration is whether or not you have a disease of some sort such as diabetes or high blood pressure.  If either of these is true, you need a little consultation before you make too many radical decisions in your eating habits.  This can be in the form of some good research online, or from your physician or a registered dietitian.

There are many foods out there which promote health and wellness.  For example, garlic has been known for centuries to have healing qualities.  Seek out vitamins that are high in fiber, vitamins and protein.  Beans, beans the musical fruit should be redone to read "beans, beans, the magical fruit."  Of course they're not really magical, but they offer great benefits nutritionally in the form of vitamins, protein and fiber.  Beans are definitely a food that you should add to your diet if you're not already.

Stay away from fried food and foods with a lot of fat.  These will clog up your arteries as well as excessive calories that can increase weight.  This, in turn, makes your body work harder to pump blood and will affect your stamina and cardiovascular health in general.  Sure you can eat these things, but like most things, do so in moderation or just occasionally.  Make sure to mix in some fresh fruits like a banana or blueberries with your breakfast.

The two areas of healthy diet and exercise are always a good place to start when it comes to health and wellness.  Used in combination with natural supplements, meditation, healthy relationships, and activities that fulfill your life purpose, diet and exercise will do almost everything you want.

Do this regularly for at least 30 days and you will be sure to notice an increase in energy as your body becomes healthier. When so inspired, continue this as part of your plan for lifelong health and abundant energy.

Apa Yang Anda Perlukan Ialah Cinta
Cinta Akan Membuat Anda Terus Hidup

  • Memberi anda rasa keseronokan semulajadi.

Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

Alliums – What Are They? And
How Do They Help Hair Grow?

Some home remedies for hair loss include rubbing natural substances like garlic and onion onto your scalp!

This newsletter discusses the benefits and practicalities of using these ideas as well as alternative variations you might prefer.

The reason why these substances can help hair growth is because of the sulfur they contain which boosts circulation when applied topically. And, since hair growth is dependent upon strong blood circulation, you can see why these compounds can be beneficial if you rub them on your scalp.

Unfortunately, the sulphur content also explains why they have such a pungent smell. And do you really want your hair smelling of garlic or onions?

No, of course not!

It's all well and good eating garlic and onions or taking supplements as they are extremely healthy for your body. But, rubbing them on your scalp at night, three or four times every week, then trying to sleep with both you and your room stinking of sulfurous compounds is completely impractical both to you and your partner in bed.

And trying to shampoo the smell away in the morning might not even work, which is also highly undesirable because it will basically affect everyone you meet!

Garlic and onions may help hair growth. Note: if your email provider does not support html, you won't be able to see this image.

However, taking garlic internally is something that's usually highly recommended (especially garlic).

Be it raw and fresh (something I personally can never do) or cooking it first (I can handle this in small doses but not every meal or every day) or maybe taking odourless garlic capsules to get a concentrated dose.

All these ideas should help your body and to some extent your hair. But this is not a cure for hair loss! The foods you eat, and supplements you take are important (and for some people with nutritional deficiencies maybe vital), but they will almost certainly not be enough to regrow your hair back and then keep it for life.

A good alternative supplement would be MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane). This substance provides biologically active sulfur and trials have shown that it can improve hair and nail growth. MSM is a very affordable supplement you can buy from most health food shops.

Whilst I try to eat healthy foods, the way I beat baldness was by using a hands-on approach.

If you've already explored my website, then you'll know that male and female hair loss resulting from androgenetic alopecia is caused by skull bone growth. This is something the hair loss industry is still not yet aware of - despite my best efforts to tell them!

To deal with the problem of hair loss, I believe you must treat the underlying cause. And this does NOT mean simply taking DHT blockers or applying drugs like minoxidil and hoping they'll be enough!

My own approach to hair loss doesn't involve taking any supplements like MSM either. To learn how it can stop hair loss and try it yourself, click the link the below:

Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

I was born in Houston and grew up here as a child, and yes, I attended the public schools here before they were air conditioned.

A big portion of my childhood was spent playing outdoors during the summer and my favorite was baseball.  Just about every day I was out in the morning home for lunch and back outside again until the sun went down.

In spite of being out in the sun a lot, the heat never seemed to be unbearable.

However, this past summer is the hottest I ever remember in Houston and on many occasions the sun exposure through the windshield of my truck, caused my hands to have a burning sensation that never happened at all when I played outside as a child.  The sun just feels different.

It is well documented that sun exposure can lead to the overproduction of melanin pigment, contribute to wrinkles, and accelerate facial aging.

Since this was one of the hottest summers in history, I decided to share a tip on how to remove "age spots" since summers like the one this year will certainly speed up that process.

Dr. W

Health Tip of the Week

Age Spot Removal- How to Get A Clearer Face and Hands

Age spots are flat dark spots that appear on the skin as a result of aging and/or over-exposure to the sun. These dark blotches are also sometimes referred to as liver spots or sun spots. These tan or brown spots occur most often in people who have a tendency to freckle or burn but as we age, most of us will develop at least a few. Since our hands and face are the areas of the body that are exposed to the sun most, these dark lesions are more likely to appear here.  While a few spots here or there are not that noticeable, sometimes a larger spot or multiple smaller lesions appear on the face.  The marks can also develop on the hands or chest as well

How to Prevent Age Spots

While they are called age spots, there is no question that increased sun exposure causes damage to our skin which eventually leads to the spots. If you have had enough sun to cause age spots, you should be aware that you might also be reaching a point of have an increased risk of developing skin cancer and therefore need to keep an eye on those spots for any signs of change. The more pigment and skin color you have serves a protective role in preventing skin cancers.

Ultra violet rays stimulate the over-production of melanin (skin pigments) which forms these small roundish shaped flat brown patches with slightly irregular edges. To prevent age spots, you need to decrease your skin's long term exposure to the sun by using a sunscreen with a high SPF any time you are out in the sun and by protecting your skin by covering it up and wearing a wide brimmed hat.  The sunscreens that block UVA light are particularly effective for this purpose.  Also, using skin care products containing topical vitamin A, vitamin C, and biopeptides can reverse this tendency to form age spots.

Treatments for Age Spot Removal

Since many individuals already have skin damage from the sun going back to childhood, you may find that you wish to remove the age spots that are already present and then take action to prevent more from appearing. There are many treatment options available to you to remove age spots.

  • Chemical peels. A chemical peel is a mixture of acidic chemicals that when applied to the skin will remove the upper layer of the skin where the age spot is present. This treatment is also used for removing wrinkles and scars and has been safely used for age spot removal for years. The recovery time will depend on the intensity of the treatment and may range from mild to moderate. You should discuss this with your dermatologist during your consultation as you may wish to decrease your recovery time by spreading your treatments over several sessions.
  • Laser Treatment. Using lasers to remove age spots has shown to be a very effective treatment that often requires only one or two sessions to make the skin on your hands and face clearer. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment cells generating heat that causes the upper layer of the skin to crust and peel removing age spots and so that the treated area heals with healthy spot-free skin. The results may take a few weeks to a month to reach its peak but will generally last for years.
  • IPL Therapy. Intense Pulsed Light therapy is an increasingly popular treatment for removing age spots and speckled brown spots due to sun effect. A broad spectrum light is sent into the deeper layers of the skin to encourage rapid cell regeneration and new skin growth to get the spotty areas to go away. This treatment will require several sessions spread over a few weeks apart to get the optimal results.
  • Liquid Nitrogen Cryotherapy. When only one spot is present or just a few small ones then you might be offered treatment with liquid nitrogen (LN2).  The LN2 is applied to or sprayed on the spot of concern for a few seconds.  After treatment the area becomes a little raised and puffy with redness.  On occasion a blister can form at the site of treatment.  You will then notice that the treated lesions will peel off over a week or two with normal skin left in place.
  • Topical Creams and Compounds. Prescription medications including topical vitamin A in the form of Retin-A or Tazorac can help with treating age spots.  Cosmeceutical products that do not require prescription including Vitamin C, A, E, kojic acid, biopeptides and other ingredients are also available to help remove age spots.  The biggest issue with using the topical creams is that you have to be patient to see the desired results.  The spots don't go away immediately so it can take weeks or months for the spots to fade.

If you have concerns about age spots or other concerns with your skin, let me know and I will be happy to help you find a solution.

Hi Readers Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi Here's Your Hair Loss Newsletter

Hi,

Macronutrients For Hair Growth…
…And Hair Loss!

Most people with androgenetic alopecia do some research into this condition and so already know that certain micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc) can help hair growth to some extent. But what about macronutrients? These foods (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) are the mainstay of our diet. So what effect do they have on the health of your hair?

This is a very important question because, in countries like Japan, where they are now adopting a Western diet, the incidence of androgenetic alopecia is rapidly increasing and catching up with the typical numbers found in countries like the UK and US.

Historically, Asians suffer androgenetic alopecia much less than Caucasians. But it's no coincidence that, as they change to the junk-food way of life enjoyed (suffered?) by the West, so too are the conditions and diseases that we suffer, becoming more and more widespread there too.

So here's a quick look at the vital things you need to know about the foods you eat and the effect they can have on your hair…

Protein

Protein is extremely important for healthy hair growth (hair is almost entirely composed of a protein called keratin). But there should be no risk of insufficient protein consumption for most people.

Although some people suffer from digestive problems which can lead to poor absorption and utilisation of the proteins they eat, the fact that hair grows quite prolifically throughout the rest of the body proves that there is still sufficient protein consumption for basically everyone. And this includes vegetarians.

Your body can use any type of protein to manufacture the keratin it needs to grow hair. When you digest protein, it gets broken down into its component parts (amino acids). Your body then reassembles these amino acids to produce the many different types of protein it needs to function.

So there's no particular type of protein-rich food or quantity that you have to eat in order to grow healthy hair.

Fats

It's well known that the hormone DHT is directly linked to androgenetic alopecia.

So it's important to realize that, if you regularly consume high levels of saturated fat (butter, cheese, cream, red meat, etc) your DHT levels can very easily increase. That's because saturated fat will raise the level of LDL cholesterol which then gets converted into DHT.

LDL is the "bad" type of cholesterol; HDL is the "good" type.

The polyunsaturated fat Omega 3 will decrease LDL cholesterol and DHT levels, and increase HDL cholesterol levels.

DHT also controls the production of sebum (which causes greasy hair). This means that your sebum levels can give you an indication of how high your DHT levels are (i.e., hair that gets greasy very quickly indicates high DHT levels).

Here's a very basic pathway that shows you how the fat you eat can produce DHT and sebum:

Conversion of fat to sebum schematic.

Carbohydrates

Eat loads of sugar and your insulin levels will go through the roof! And a high concentration of insulin can then cause levels of a substance called SHBG to decrease. SHBG helps bind (lock up) testosterone in the blood and, therein, reduce DHT production.

So, straight away, it's easy to see how sugar can be detrimental to hair growth.

But that's not all…

When carbohydrates are fully digested, they form simple sugars which get released into the blood. Refined grains (like white rice and white flour) will get digested much quicker than unrefined grains (e.g., brown rice and wholegrain flour). This means that refined grains will also raise insulin levels much faster and higher as well.

If you consume more calories than your body needs, it can convert any excess into saturated fat and form LDL cholesterol. And, as explained in "Fats" above, this can be bad news for your hair!

Finally, if you keep consuming junk food in excess, you could eventually develop diabetes (a condition that has been linked to androgenetic alopecia).

So, there's plenty of information there for you to chew over. And plenty of good reasons why you should start eating healthy food if you're not already doing so.

Would a hamburger taste as good if you knew it caused hair loss? – Note: if your email provider does not support html, you won't be able to see this image.

Summary - Recipe for hair growth success?

If you consume plenty of Omega 3 from oily fish (perhaps salmon three or four times/week) and cut right down on the junk food (including sugar, refined grains and saturated fat) then you will help both your hair and your health in general. Olive oil (which does not increase cholesterol levels) can be used as a substitute for butter, and flax seed (linseed), pumpkin seeds and walnuts can provide some Omega 3 for vegetarians.

There's no doubt that the excess consumption of saturated fats and sugars can hinder hair growth - by increasing DHT production, saturated fats will accelerate the skull expansion and hair loss process.

It's all good food for thought!

Bon appetit!

Update From Dr. Weaver

Hello Readers,

Summer is rapidly coming to an end and school has started again which signals the onset of another year of learning for elementary, middle school, high school, college, and graduate students.

What about those of us who have completed our formal education?  What are our benchmarks for moving from one level of education to the next?  Is it a promotion at work, or a new hobby or skill we decided to try and master?

I would like to encourage you to set a learning goal for the next year related to something that you enjoy.  It could be a refresher or update related to your college major; mine was chemistry so I don't think I will be going over that again.

Or, you could choose something that you always wanted to do but never had a chance to do such as art or music or even public speaking.

I think I will do the same and I will let you know what I decided upon soon.

Today, I am providing you with tips on how to stay healthy and avoid illnesses.  With winter around the corner, breakouts of diseases become more common.

Dr. W

Health Tip of the Week

Winter is Coming:  Here Are 5 Ways to Protect Your Self From Illness

As the change of seasons gets closer and closer, it is a good time for you to develop a strategy on maintaining your health and avoiding illness.

While the tips that follow can be of benefit year round, certain communicable conditions are more common during the cooler months because we tend to stay indoors more and the increased human contact is associated with a higher incidence of diseases that spread from person to person.

Since the cure for the common cold still has not been discovered, it is best to take precautions and minimize the possibility of coming in contact with the many sources of diseases.  Here are some tips to help keep you away from the culprits.

  1. Safe food handling and storage- Did you know that there is no such thing as the 24 hour flu? If you have become violently ill for the duration of 24-48 hours or less, you have probably consumed contaminated food. This may be the result of cross-contamination (food that has touched other tainted foods or surfaces), undercooked meat or food that has been improperly stored or thawed. You can prevent illness by disinfecting your kitchen and food preparation surfaces often and following safe food storage guidelines as set out by the Food Safety and Inspection Services. Always use a meat thermometer to determine if your food is properly cooked. This is the only way to really tell if your meat is fully cooked to a safe temperature. Use an appliance thermometer to ensure your refrigerator and freezer are keeping your foods at safe temperatures during storage and store all meats at the bottom of the fridge and vegetables and other foods at the top. This will prevent the meats from cross-contaminating your raw foods.
  2. Take care of your immune system - Your body's immune system is your natural defence against illness and disease. We are designed to fight off external attacks from infections, viruses, chemicals and our environment as well as internal diseases such as cancer. Our skin, organs and blood all work together to battle disease but if any one area becomes stressed or weakened, the immune system can break down and allows us to become ill. A healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, the right amount of sleep, exercise, reduced stress, proper hygiene and avoidance of toxins such as tobacco and alcohol will help you maintain a healthy immune system. Supplements including protein, vitamins A, C, and E, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium, calcium, iron, and antioxidants, including carotenoids like lycopene and beta carotene will help keep your immune system strong.
  3. Hand washing - We all know to wash our hands after going to the bathroom, but there are a great deal of other sources that are equally as germ laden as a bathroom. Surfaces such as keyboards, telephones, TV remote controls, money, hand rails and banisters and so on are handled often by many people and are rarely disinfected. Our hands pick up germs and bacteria constantly. Get in the habit of keeping your fingers out of your mouth, nose and eyes as these are the three main portals for ingesting bacteria and viruses. Wash your hands not only after using the bathroom, but before you eat. To wash your hands properly, wet your hands with warm (not hot) water, lather with soap for at least 20 seconds away from the stream of water and then rinse thoroughly. It is the suds of the soap that trap the germs in the bubbles and allow them to be rinsed away.
  4. Balanced diet and exercise - Your body is like a fine tuned machine. It requires adequate fuel and movement to function properly. A balanced diet will ensure that all of your organs are well maintained with the necessary energy, vitamins and minerals it needs and movement will keep your circulation and joints healthy.
  5. Reduce stress - There is no doubt about it, high stress levels can do a number on your health. Your immune system will weaken, you can develop high blood pressure and your mental health can suffer when you are exposed to stressors long-term. We all have things that stress us out whether it is from work, kids, financial problems, etc. It may not be possible to eliminate stress from your life entirely, but you can give your body "time off" to help it recover. The key is to identify the source of your stress and do what you can to reduce it. The other important factor is to take time to de-stress. This may involve taking some "me" time or maybe just a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing several times per day.

The fact is that illness can many times be prevented and taking a pro-active approach to your health is always much more effective at keeping yourself healthy than treating illnesses when they occur. You know the saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

Write down these 5 tips on an index card and post them in your kitchen or at your desk at work  as a constant reminder.
